Background: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia stopped in Khartoum of Friday (11 May) for two hours en-route to Cairo for important talks with egyptian President, Anwar Sadat. During the short stop-over, the Emperor was greeted by Sudan's President Jaafar El Nimeiry and reviewed a guard of honour at the airport.
The single round of talks which were to follow in Cairo, covered peace proposals in the Middle East, African issues and relations between the two countries. The talks in Egypt were the first stage of a major international trip including a private visit to London talks in Washington.
The eight one-year-old Ethiopian leader undertakes this major trip before participating in the scheduled summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) later this month. He has maintained excellent relations with the United States, but the talks in Egypt follow a period of uncertainty over relations with Egypt. There had been persistent reports in Egyptian newspapers that Ethiopia had given military bases and other facilities to Israel....reports quickly denied by Ethiopia.
