    Background: TWO MOTORISTS PLUNGED TO THEIR DEATHS AND 17 OTHERS WERE INJURED WHEN A BRIDGE CARRYING THE "KING BAUDOUIN" MOTORWAY FROM ANTWERP TO LIEGE COLLAPSED INTO A CANAL IN BELGIUM TODAY (SUNDAY).

    EIGHT CARS WERE GROSSING THE BRIDGE, 150 YARDS (150 METRES) LONG, IN BOTH DIRECTIONS WHEN IT COLLAPSED. THOSE IN ONE CAR WHICH FELL INTO THE NETHE CANAL ESCAPED BY CLAMBERING ONTO THE CAR'S ROOF.

    THE BRIDGE, WHICH IS SEVEN MILES (12 KMS) FROM THE PORT OF ANTWERP, COLLAPSED IN THE EARLY MORNING OF DARKNESS.

    BELGIUM'S MINISTER OF INTERIOR, MR. HERMAN VANDERPOORTEM, WENT TO THE SCENE SHORTLY AFTER THE DISASTER OCCURRED. THE CAUSE OF THE COLLAPSE HAS NOT YET BEEN ESTABLISHED.
