Background: A new Jordanian cabinet, under the leadership of Mr. Saad Juma'a met for the first time in Amman yesterday. Mr. Saad Juma'a had been Prime Minister of Jordan since last April until he and his cabinet resigned last month.
He was asked to form a new cabinet by King Hussein on Tuesday. After 24 hours of consultation, the Prime Minister tendered his list of 16 Ministers to the King and the new cabinet was formed by Royal decree.
Mr. Juma'a has retained control over defence in his cabinet. Mr. Ahmed Toukan, formerly Foreign Minister, has become Deputy Premier and Minister of State. The new Foreign Minister, who joins the cabinet for the first time, is Mr. Mohammed Adib Al-Aamiri.
Other key posts in the cabinet remain unchanged. Most important, the economy is still under the control of Mr. Hatem Al Zu'bi -- a post of particularly heavy responsibility following the Middle East war and Jordan's loss of territory west of the Jordan river.
Finance remains with Mr. Abdel Wahab Al Majali, but a new minister, Mr. Shukri Al Muhtadi, comes into the cabinet in charge of reconstruction and development.
Today's meeting of the new cabinet took place at the home of Mr. Saad Juma'a.
