Background: In the north Malayan city of Penang at a colourful and solemn ceremony foundation stones were laid of the 82-foot reclining image of Lord Buddha. The cost of building this enormous image is estimated at GBP.7,000 stg. and when completed it will be the largest of its kind in Malaya.

The ceremony was held at Penang's "Wat Chaiya Mangalaram Buddhist Temple."
Hundreds of Buddhists from Malaya, Thailand and other countries attended the ceremony, and among them was the world-famous American monk Dr. Robert S. Clifton (Buddhist nake: Venerable Sumangalo).

The erection of this reclining image of Lord Buddha is to commemorate the triumph of Buddhist teachings which the Buddhists believe will come about in the 25th century A.D.

The ceremony began with the pealing of the temple bells when the Thai Consul in Penang, Mr. Suphot Phiansunthen lighted the candles of the shrine of Lord Buddha.

Then Mon Ven. Pra Atta-Moli initiated the ceremony. The layers of the foundation stone were presented with yellow sash (belt) and holy water sprinkled on them.

The "Divine Teacher" who had been specially invited from Thailand to perform the ceremony, presented foundation stones to each of the layers.

Ven. Pra Atta-Moli laid the central foundation stone first. After this the Thai Consul led in the laying of the eight other foundation stones.

(The eight foundation stones symbolise the eight chief disciples of Buddha who wandered forth to proclaim and preach the Doctrine in the eight cardinal points of the compass: East, south-east, south, southwest, west, northwest, north, and northeast.)
Mrs. Choong Eng Hye (pronounced Hai) was the only woman among the eight to lay a foundation stone.

Monks then blessed the foundation stones.

Addresses were delivered by several monks including Ven. Sumangalo. (su-men-ge-low).

Chanting by the congregation and presentation of food to the participating Bhikkus (disciples) brought the ceremony to an end.
