    Background: MANILA, PHILIPPINES

Over 4,000 demonstrators including students, workers and members of the clergy jammed the Plaza Bonifacio in Manila on October 1 to protest against President Marcos's 16 day of the United States in September. The demonstrators was the largest Filipino anti-government protest this year. Buildings were draped with banners denouncing President marcos as "a traitor who betrayed the Filipino people", and effigies of the president and US symbol "Uncle Sam" were stoned and later burned by chanting demonstrators. Among the speakers who addressed the crowd was Cipriano Malonzo, acting chairman of the May 1 Movement, a workers' organisation which was recently the target of government measures to control suspected subversives. President Marcos's visit to the United States was his first for 16 years countries have been uneasy but this opened the way for further discussions on the United States military bases in the Philippines.
