Background: Miss Grenada, Jennifer Hosten was named Miss World after a contest interrupted at one stage by shouting and smoke bombs and leaflets being thrown on the stage at London's Albert hall on Friday night (November 20).

Miss Hosten, a 22-year-old Air Hostess, was the West Indian island's first representative in the contest.

South Africa's first coloured entrant in the contest, Pearl Hansen, aged 20, a machinist from Salt River, came second, and Miss Israel, Irith Lavi, was awarded third place.

The unprecedented interruption came as American comedian, Bob Hope was entertaining the large audience, watched by millions of television viewers.

An estimated 50 protesters rushed towards the stage, shouting and waving rattles. Smoke bombs were hurled on the stage and in the chaos which reigned for several minutes, Bob Hope stood aside.

The demonstrators, members of the Women's Liberation Movement, were removed from the hall. They claim that beauty contests degrade women.

When order had been restored Bob Hope returned and won back the good mood of the audience.

When the new Miss World was announced beautiful Miss Hosten, obviously controlling her emotions, walked regally forward to take her place on the Throne. She was installed with the regalia of her new office.

Then it was Bob Hope's turn to come forward and place the Crown on her head and bestowed the traditional kiss on the glamorous young woman who will reign as Miss World 1970.

    The new Miss World's vital statistics are 36, 24, 38 (91cm, 61cm, 96cm).

The moment of truth drew near when the final seven most glamorous beauty queens on earth paraded not only before the judges and audience in the hall, but also before millions of television viewer. From these seven would be chosen Miss World 1970 and two runners-up. Despite an unprecedented interruption by a group of Women's Liberation Movement members, who threw smoke bombs and leaflets on the stage, the final decisions were announced. In third place, Miss Israel, Chest Lavi.

Second, Miss Africa South, Pearl Jansen, south Africa's first coloured entrant in the contest.

And Miss World, 1970, Miss Grenada, beautiful Jennifer Hosten, a 22-year-old Air Hostess. It is always an emotional moment for the winner of the coveted beauty title. The new Miss World was no exception.

American comedian Bob Hope stepped forward to place the Crown on the lovely head of the girl from the West Indian island of Grenada. Tradition gave the comedian the first kiss for the new Miss World.
