Background: INTRODUCTION: More than 5-thousand members of an association formed by high caste employees of the Government marched in protest on Tuesday (28 April) over loss of jobs to lower caste workers. The demonstration, held in New Delhi, was a peaceful one, but is the latest in a series of protest at the Government's work distribution policies.

SYNOPSIS: The marchers, members of an organisation known as All India Oppressed Employees Association, are demanding an end to job reservations of low caste employees and Harijans formerly know as Untouchables. Under the Constitution of India, the lower caste communities have been provided with better promotional avenues to bring their standards nearer those of the more advanced communities. This has had the effect of reducing the jobs available to the high castes who formerly made up all Government workers.

A long memorandum was presented by the marchers to Government officials. Agitation has been growing against job reservation policies and has led to a number of deaths in the State of Gujarat where medical colleges have been opened to lower caste students.
