Background: An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale killed at least 21 people and wrecked buildings in the northern city of Laoag on August 17. Damage was first estimated at 50 million pesos (5 million U.S. dollars). Bridges were wrecked and boarding house was said to have collapsed like an accordion killing ten instantly and trapping victims inside. A day after the quake relief workers were still combing the ruined buildings for the injured. Some 200 people were said to have been injured in Laoag, which is the capital of Ilocos Norte province in the far north of Luzon island. Most forms of communications were cut and relief workers feared the final death and injury toll would be much higher. The earthquake also wrecked the church of Santa Monica in Sarrat township where President Marcos's youngest daughter was recently married in a lavish display of wealth and ostentation to sportsman Greggy Araneta. Their house was also damaged by the quake. In one town near Sarrat 45 houses were reported covered by a landslide.
