Background: The agreement between Israel and Egypt has caused reverberations throughout the Middle East. Dr. Henry Kissinger, the American statesman whose efforts finally brought about the signing went to two capitals to explain the effects of the agreement and urge similar dialogue between other Arab nations and Israel. His first stop was Jordan for talks with King Hussein, and then he flew to damascus for talks with ??? Hafez al-Assad.
Dr. Kissinger views the Egyptian-Israeli agreement as a first step towards a lasting peace in the Middle East. But news of the signing has been far from warmly received in other Arab capitals.
Meantime, in Israel, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin presented the agreement to the Israeli Knesset on Tuesday for approval. He praised the realistic approach of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and said he agreed the accord represented a turning point in Israeli-Arab relations.
