Background: Some 300 Chilean journalists demonstrated on May 17 in the capital, Santiago, following a meeting at their press club to debate grievances over censorship. Many of the demonstrators wore gags over their mouths in protest over government censorship. The journalists demanded freedom of the press and shouted their support for "Radio Co-operative", the independent station which military President Augusto Pinochet banned several days earlier. The station is not permitted to broadcast news bulletins, as the Pinochet regime holds it partly responsible for recent violent anti-government demonstrations, in which two people died. On May 9, some 40 Chilean journalists marched in protest against government censorship of a copper mining union's bulletin about a planned strike.
