Background: Archbishop Hilarion Capucci arrived in Damascus on Saturday (20 January). He is an honorary member of the Palestine National Council, a parliament-in-exile currently in session in Damascus. In an address to the Council, he called for greater Arab unity against Israel.
SYNOPSIS: Monsignor Capucci was released from an Israeli jail early last year. He had served two years of a twelve year prison sentence, after being tried on charges of supplying arms to Palestinian guerrillas. Syrian-born Monsignor Capucci was the Greek orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.
After greetings at Damascus airport, the Archbishop went on to address the Palestinian National Council on Sunday (21 January). The Council is composed of three-hundred Palestinian leaders.
The Council members are expected to approve plans for resisting Egyptian-Israeli peace moves, and for stepping up their guerrilla war against Israel. It is also likely to accept recommendations which call for a cautious approach to the developing rapprochement between the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and Jordan.
In his address to the Council the Archbishop called for solidarity among the Arab states. Without this, he said, they would play a dangerous game, which would destroy all their hopes and endeavours. Before mounting the rostrum Archbishop Capucci was greeted with a three-minute ovation.
