Background: Former British High Commissioner in Malaya, Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer, arrived in the Malayan capital of Kuala Lumpur accompanied by Lady Templer on Oct 12 on a ten-day visit.
Sir Gerald, who pioneered the destruction of the armed Communist forces in Malaya, was received at the airport by Minister for Communications Mr. V.T. Sambanthan, the Acting High Commissioner for the United Kingdom Mr. G.E. Crombie, and Lt.Gen Sir Rodney Moore, Chief of Staff of Malayan Armed Forces. Guests of the Malayan Government, the Templers will later visit Hong Kong and Australia.
The Field Marshal, who as General Templer was British High Commissioner in Malaya from 1952 to 1954, will be invested by the Paramount ruler of Malaya with the highest award for non-royalty, "S.M.N." at a private ceremony later this week. Carrying with it the title of "Tun", the order will be the first ever conferred on a British subject. (Malaya's Deputy Prime Minister "Tun" Abdul Razak is holder of this title.)
Sir Gerald and Lady Templer will also visit places and institutional with which they were associated during their stay in Malaya.
After relinquishing the Malayan post, Sir Gerald was the Chief of Imperial General Staff till 1958. He now holds a number of executive posts including the chairmanship of the British Metal Corporation.
