Background: Over the last two years, African nationalist propaganda has filtered backwards and forwards across the 1500 miles of common frontier linking the now independent Congo Republic with the Portuguese West African colony of Angola. In fear that the Congo's troubles might spread into the colony, the Portuguese Government are reported to have massed some 25,000 troops within 25 miles of the frontier.

Contingents of soldiers and equipment arrived recently in the ancient capital of Luanda, and were sent in the harbour area as a military band marched along the sea-front.

There are over 4 million Africans in Angola - a Portuguese possession since the close of the 15th century - and not more than about 170,000 whites and coloured people. It is reported that deposed Congolese Premier Lumumba recently called on the Africans in the Portuguese colony to "throw off their imperialist chains", Congo newspapers are said to continuously report growing unrest in Angola and call for them to revolt. Reports also say that dozens of "agitators" in the country have been arrested.

One of the greatest threats is thought to be the fact that a section of the sizeable Bakongo tribe live in Angola. These tribesmen regard President Kasavubu of the Congo as their leader. It is said that if he called on them to rise against the Portuguese a full scale revolt could be expected in this 500,000 miles of territory.
