TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ 8) Pompidou: "In the course of many years of work alongside General de Gaulle, I have lived and learned day by day. My style is different. I do not have his political statute. I do not have his international prestige. But, if I have the confidence of the country and I can see coming towards me, to help me not only those men who yesterday voted YES -- but also those who felt that it was their duty to vote NO to the referendum, and who accept the essential principles of the Fifth Republic while at no price wanting to return to the manipulations of the Fourth -- then I shall have the following aim for the country: if I have this influx of new men, I am sure that we can make of the Fifth Republic something lasting."

Since then, M. Pompidou had dedicated himself to banking and local politics near his country home. Then, after the wave of speculation which followed the referendum and President de Gaulle's resignation, Georges Pompidou announced his candidacy on April 29.

Since then he has been preparing his campaign, which is now launched, on a Gaullist platform of continuity. In his speech at the Centre Administratif (Administrative Centre) as Asnieres, M. Pompidou said:
