Background: A nostalgia for pest fashions has brought the long slim lines of the thirties into the limelight again. Lachasse, the London fashion house, revealed it's spring and summer collection on Tuesday (5 February). It was almost entirely based on the rather dowdy styles adopted by women of fashion during the Great Depression forty years ago.

One of the Lachasse designers explained that the Thirties Look is the obvious style for the fashion-conscious this season. Design trends, he said, always reflect the climate of the times and thirties styles are therefore, appropriate garb for the financially dark days that are predicte this year.

The new Lachasse styles are designed with the elder woman in mind. Younger women are apparently no longer interested in haute couture, nor do they usually have the price of a Lachasse original - at least GBP 100 ($220). However, gloom has not affected the house's business, and Lachasse says it expects to do well this season from clients attempting to cheer themselves up by buying expensive originals.

Ropes of pearls, chandelier earrings and tulle shawls add a touch of glamour to both day and evening wear. Stockings change from min to navy blue as the sun goes down, but there's little leg on display, with hemlines down to three inches below the knee.

The House of Lachasse, which has been bringing out haute couture collections for more than forty years, is one of the few fashion houses that has not gone over to ready-to-wear designing.
