Background: Violence continued in El Salvador on Sunday (23 March) when twenty-five peasants were killed in a clash with security forces near Tacachico, 60 kilometres (38 miles) north of San Salvador. The incident followed shootings on thursday (20 March) when thirteen people were killed during confrontations between left-wing militant groups and government forces.

SYNOPSIS: The bodies of some of the thirteen victims were still lying in San Salvador's Metropolitan Cathedral on Friday (21 March). The left-wing militants have twice postponed the funerals in protest against alleged government oppression. Since El Salvador's ruling civilian military junta brought in agrarian and banking reforms early this month, violence has increased and at least 140 people have died.

Nine of the left-wing guerrillas were killed when their group, called the "Popular Revolutionary Bloc", attacked an army patrol at Tecoluca, about 75 kilometres ( about 47 miles) from the capital. The left-wing claims that a state of siege imposed by the government is a strategy to cover up its oppression in El Salvador. Extremists on both sides oppose the government reforms. The left-wing want more and the right fears a challenge to their positions in the country's economic life.
