Background: In Nairobi on Monday (18 October) thousands of Kenyan army men, and their Commander -- Major-General J.K. Mulinge -- gave a pint of blood as one of the events of the week in which Kenyatta Day is celebrated.

Kenyatta Day is a public holiday on the 20th of October, marking the 19th anniversary of the day when Jomo Kenyatta was arrested by the British Government.

He was finally released from detention in 1961, and became Kenya's first President after Independence, 1963.

SYNOPSIS: Many thousand of Kenyans have been donating blood during Kenyatta Week. In Nairobi on Monday thousands of Kenyan army men donated a pint of blood -- to save the lives of their fellow-citizens -- ked by their Commander, Major-General J.K. Mulinge.

Also making a contribution on behalf of the Government where the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Mr. J.G. Kiereini.....
