The bank robber lost his life when a bomb triggered by his mouth, blew up when he was shot. The explosion came only after he'd stolen a large amount of money and held two bank staff hostage. He'd also successfully negotiated a getaway car.
Some eyewitnesses said the fatal shot was fired by a policeman, but the police made no comment. One policemen, however, was badly hurt in the explosion. Another ten people were also hurt, and nearby buildings were damaged.
Thousands of dollars in stolen currency was scattered over the street by the explosion, and police had to appeal for it to be returned.

Background: A bank robber carrying a bomb blew himself up on Thursday (10 May) in Kenora, Ontario. The explosion happened just after the unidentified robber left the Canadian Imperial bank carrying stolen money - and a bomb. The robbers bomb was a satchel containing explosives wired to a switch he held in his mouth. He warned that if anything happened to him, his mouth would open and the bomb would go off.
After negotiating a getaway truck with police who were surrounding the bank, the robber emerged and was shot. The bomb exploded, killing the robber and injuring 10 onlookers and a policeman. The police would not say who fired the fatal shot.
The explosion caused extensive damage to surrounding buildings. Thousands of dollars of stolen money was scattered across the street by the explosion. Police had to appeal for the return of money picked up by onlookers. Witnesses say it was a policeman who fired the shot which preceded the explosion. They say that an order to "get him" was given as the robber emerged from the bank.
