Background: Seventeen year-old Tracy Austin upset the top-seeded Martina Navratilova on Sunday (23 March) to win the Avon Women's Tennis Championship in New York 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

SYNOPSIS: Navratilova and Austin both came through impressive victories on Saturday (22 March) to set up a rematch of last year's (1979) Avon final. Navratilova had downed Evonne Goolagong Cawley 6-2, 3-6,6-0 and Austin had humbled Billie Jean King, 19 years her senior, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 and Austin had humbled Billie Jean King, 19 years her senior, 6-3, 6-1. Last year Navratilova beat Austin for the Avon title ... the only one of their thirteen matches in 1979 that went three seats. Twenty-three year old Navratilova, twice a Wimbledon titlist, went into this match holding a thirteen to seven career edge over Austin.

But the defending champion and world's top-ranked female player, in losing only her second match of the year, was far below form, committing fifty-two unforced errors.

In the third set, and the long rallies are all going Austin's way.

Austin, who had lost only two matches out of twenty-five this year (1980) won the Avon Championship 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 ... and one-hundred thousand dollars in prize money.
