Background: Queen Juliana of Holland opened a new radio telescope complex at Westerbork near the border with West Germany on Wednesday (24 June).

The telescope consists of twelve antennae positioned in a line over a distance of 1600 metres. Each antennae has a 25 metres (80 feet) diameter parabolic reflector. The motorised reflectors can turn in any direction to catch faint radio signals from the outer reaches of space. A computer is used to control the movements of the telescope system which is designed to observe activity emanating from sources billions of light-years from Earth.

The movements of the twelve reflectors of the telescope are co-ordinated to achieve a range which would otherwise only be possible with an antennae about one mile across (1 1/2 kms). At the opening ceremony Queen Juliana switched on the telescope's rotating equipment.

The radio telescope is to be used by Dutch University astro-physicists.
