QUESTION: "Do you plan to have a meeting today with Dr. Jarring?"
U THANT: "Yes, we are meeting every day. Yes, every day".
QUESTION: "Is Dr. Jarring and yourself meeting with any of the other Mid-East Ambassadors?"
U THANT: "No, we meet, just the two of us."
QUESTION: "Thank you very much.
Dr. Jarring spoke to reporters at the end of Thursday's discussions with the Secretary-General:
QUESTION: "Good afternoon Dr. Jarring. Can you give us some comments about today's meeting. do you feel it's progressing satisfactorily?"
JARRING: "I can't give you any comment at all. My line is that I can't give you any comment. We have had the meetings, we continue every day."
QUESTION: "Are things going along smoothly, can you say that, Dr. Jarring?"
JARRING: "I prefer to say nothing for the time being. There will be a time when I can say something, but not now".
QUESTION: "Just one thing now Dr. Jarring that we could ask you. There are reports that you are not exactly too happy about the talks at a lower level. That you would prefer to see them on a foreign minister level?"
JARRING: "I have no comment on it at all, nothing. Thank you.
QUESTION: "Thank you very much."

Background: Secretary-General U Thant and United Nations Middle-East peace mediator Dr. Gunnar Jarring continued their discussions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday (13 August).
On Friday, Egypt, Jordan and Israel were reported ready to begin peace talks in New York but a dispute over the level of representation was said to have held up a formal go-ahead signal from Dr. Gunnar Jarring. However, a compromise was believed imminent and Dr. Jarring was expected to announce before the weekend the beginning of the talks which he will handle.
When interviewed by reporters both U Thant and Dr. Jarring declined to comment on the progress of their discussions so far.
