Background: Part of the 67-ton consignment of lethal nerve gas which the United States government plans to dump into the Atlantic ocean was loaded onto trains in Anniston, Alabama, yesterday (Friday) in preparation for transportation to the Florida coast.

But while these preparations were being made, an international outcry against dumping the gas into the sea was growing.

The US Government plans to dispose of the nerve gas capsules by dropping them into the Atlantic 283 miles (450 kms) off Cape Kennedy. The capsules, sealed into concrete vaults, are being taken by train from two bases -- Anniston and Richmond, Virginia.

Great safety precautions are being taken to avoid leakages. These include a special train to precede the nerve gas train to ensure the safety of the track, and the use of animals and mechanical detectors in case of seepage.

But yesterday, United Nations Secretary-General U Thant joined the outcry against the dumping, by pointing out that it was in contravention of UN resolutions, and asked for an international study into the problem. Meantime, it is reported the US government has delayed the dumping while having discussions with world experts.
