Background: Japan's Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako paid a visit to the United nations on Monday (6 october) as part of a two week visit the royal couple is making to the United States.
The visit was made amid strict security precautions. All guests at functions attended by the Emperor and his wife were carefully screened. On Monday two American born Chinese, unofficially linked with a possible assassination plot against the Emperor, were formally charged with a federal gun offence. They were arrested at the weekend, when federal agents raided their brooklyn flat and seized a large cache of guns.
It is the first ever visit to the United States by an Emperor and Empress from japan. For some weeks before Emperor Hirohito left Japan there were violent demonstrations against the trip from some sections of the community. Many japanese believe the visit will cement relations between the two countries to the extent that Japan could eventually be put in the position of becoming an American ally in the event of another war.
When Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako visited the U.N. on Monday they were given a personal tour of the headquarters by Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim, and his wife, Elisabeth. They visited the Security Council, the General Assembly and viewed the united Nations' peace bell, an ornate bronze bell donated to the U.N. by the Japanese people in 1954.
After attending several other functions in New york on Monday (6 October) they flew to Chicago on Tuesday morning (7 October) on the next leg of their whirlwind tour.
