Background: On the evening of his first day in West Pakistan, Feb 10, the Duke of Edinburgh went sightseeing at the Mogul Akbar Fort, Lahore, built in about 1556, and the Emperor Auzan gzeb's marble-domed mosque with the world's largest quadrangle.

Superintendent of Archaeology, M.W. Khan, conducted the Duke round the centuries old fort, the mosque, the beautiful surrounding gardens where domicile deer graze alongside sheep, and an island set in the large garden pond.

Earlier in the day, the duke arrived aboard a Comet, at Lahore Airport for his week tour. Governor Akhtar Hussain of West Pakistan welcomed him.

At a reception the Duke was presented with a fine silver casket and addressed as "the undoubted representative of the youth of the Commonwealth", by the former Pakistani Chief of Justice, Sir Abdur Rashid.
