Background: BRITISH MARINE COMMANDOS LEFT DAR ES SALAAM YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FOR THEIR BASE IN BRITAIN. THEY WERE USED AS A SECURITY FORCE DURING THE RECENT UNREST. A GROUP OF ABOUT 100 OFFICERS AND MEN FORMED AN ADVANCE PARTY; THE REMAINDER OF THE TROOPS WILL FOLLOW IN THE COMING WEEK.

AT THE AIRPORT, THE COMMANDOS WERE WEIGHED WITH THEIR BAGGAGE BEFORE CLIMBING ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT, SPECIALLY CHARTERED FOR THE FLIGHT. THE MARINES, MEN OF THE 41ST COMMANDO, WILL GO DIRECT TO THEIR BARRACKS NEAR PLYMOUTH. A STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT NYERERE'S OFFICE STATED THAT THE TROOPS WOULD BE REPLACED BY A REGIMENT OF NIGERIANS.

IT WAS AT THE END OF JANUARY THAT BRITISH TROOPS FLEW INTO TANGANYIKA AT THE REQUEST OF THE GOVERNMENT. THE COMMANDOS DISARMED MUTINEERS IN THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES, AND POLICED TROUBLE SPOTS. AS A RESULT, THE MUTINY AND POLITICAL UNREST WHICH THREATENED TO SWEEP THROUGH EAST AFRICA WAS QUICKLY CONTAINED.
