Background: The widow of the late President Salvador Allende of Chile told an international inquiry in Finland on Thursday (22 March) that "behind the walls of jails, concentration camps, police stations and stadiums the only sport is torture".

Mrs. Hortensia Bussi De Allende was speaking at the first session of an "International Commission of Inquiry into the Crimes of the Military Junta in Chile".

She said the knowledge of the truth by world opinion would help to stop the hands of the killers, to open the gates of the jails and to end the concentration camps.

The Commissions members, many of them lawyers, come from nearly 30 countries.

They include the Guatemalan Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Miguel Angel Asturias, Soviet Nobel Prize winner for Physics, Pavel Cherenkov; Chandrajeet Yadav, secretary General of India's Congress Party and from Britain, Vice Chairman of the International Peace Bureau, Arthur Booth, and several Professors of Law from the United States.

Mr. Kalevi Sorsa, Finnish Prime Minister told the opening session that regardless of world opinion, democracy and civil rights had been crushed under the heels of military boots in Chile. He added that a delegation of Finnish parliamentarians who recently visited Chile were convinced that the military dictatorship established in Chile had resulted in tragic violations of human rights.
