Background: As the joint session of South Korea's National Assembly opened, Seoul, Aug 9, anti-Liberal demonstrators clashed with police. They demanded that Liberal members - partisans of ex-President Syngman Rhee - be expelled from the Assembly. But police maintained order, while members of the House of Councillor and the House of Representatives participated in a brief opening ceremony.
Prior to the joint session, the Upper House elected former President of Yunsi University as Chairman, and the Lower House elected Kwak Sang Hoon as speaker.
