CU Moi speaking
"As we all know, man has, through his society, bettered his living standards, created industries which have in time caused harmful side effects: the pollution of the air, sea and rives by the discharge of smoke and refuse. We are told to change the landscape by the destruction of forest for domestication, thus leaving the rivers to dry up, the land to be eroded and desolated indefinitely to our own disadvantage. We have destroyed wildlife or forced it away from its natural habitat, thus reducing its ability to breed, and exist naturally. But I am glad, Mr.president, that even at this late hour man has at long last realised that he must act to protect his environment in order to save himself from the possibilities of extinction."

Background: The third International Parliamentary Conference on Human Environment began in Nairobi, Kenya no Monday (7 April).
The three-day conference brought together delegates from all over the world, including the Communist bloc. The conference was a pure back-bencher affair with no government ministers allowed to attend as delegates. More than a hundred members of Parliament from scores of countries took part in the talks related to the Human Environment. The conference, held at the Kenyatta Conference Centre in Nairobi, was opened by Kenyan Vice-President Daniel Arap Moi. He told the delegates that he was glad that man had at last realised that he must act to protect his environment.
