    Background: POINT SALINES, GRENADA

Grenada's international airport at Point Salines was inaugurated on October 28 and huge crowds flocked to greet the landing of the first commercial flight there. A Cuban workforce carried out the initial stages of construction and it was this Cuban presence which triggered the United States-led invasion of thee Caribbean island in October 1983. President Reagan has claimed the airstrip was being built for use by Cuban and Soviet jets. His administration argued the airport was too big for Grenada's legitimate tourism needs. Since the invasion, the United States has carried on the construction work. The 2,900 metre (9,500 foot) runway will begin regular service before the end of the year. Grenada's Tourism Board Director Richard Sherman said at the inauguration ceremony, the airport was a sign of hope for the island's 100,000 inhabitants. It is hoped that a boom in the tourist industry will help revive Grenada's stagnant economy.
