Background: AFRICAN "FREEDOM FIGHTERS" - 150 IN NUMBER - CHEERED PRESIDENT NKRUMAH OF GHANA IN THE PARLIAMENT HOUSE, ACCRA, ON JUNE 4TH WHEN HE TOLD THEM THAT HE HAD SET THE END OF DECEMBER AS A NEW DEADLINE FOR THE COLONIAL POWERS TO WITHDRAW FROM AFRICA. PRESIDENT NKRUMAH WAS SPEAKING AT THE CLOSING OF A "POSITIVE ACTION CONFERENCE FOR AFRICAN LIBERATION" ATTENDED BY THE LEADERS OF NATIONALIST MOVEMENTS FROM 19 AFRICAN COUNTRIES STILL UNDER RULE. HE CALLED ON THE UNITED NATIONS TO DEVOTE ITS FORTHCOMING SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE PROBLEM OF COLONIALISM IN AFRICA.

IN A STRONG ANTI-COLONIAL SPEECH, PRESIDENT NKRUMAH SAID: " I MUST AGAIN URGE THE UNITED NATIONS TO SEE TO IT THAT ITS OWN DECLARATION ON THE LIQUIDATION OF COLONIALISM IS GIVEN PRACTICAL EFFECT WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY. SO LONG AS COLONIALISM EXISTS IN AFRICA, AFRICANS CANNOT HELP TALKING THE WAY WE DO NOW. AFRICA THEREFORE APPEALS TO THE UNITED NATIONS TO LIVE UP TO ITS REPUTATION AS THE GREATEST BASTION OF WORLD PEACE, AND DEMANDS THAT THIS YEAR'S UNITED NATIONS SESSION BE DEVOTED TO THE PROBLEM OF COLONIALISM IN AFRICA. FURTHERMORE, THE UNITED NATIONS SHOULD MAKE A FIRM DECLARATION CALLING ON THE COLONIAL POWERS TO QUIT AFRICA BY DECEMBER 31,1962".

PRESIDENT NKRUMAH SAID THAT WHEN HE CALLED THE FIRST INDEPENDENT AFRICAN STATES CONFERENCE IN APRIL,1958, THERE WERE ONLY EIGHT INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES BUT TODAY THE NUMBER WAS NEARLY 30 AND MORE WERE ON THE WAY.

AMONG THE DELEGATES PRESENT: MR KENNETH KAUNDA, THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN AFRICAN LEADER. THERE WERE ALSO DELEGATES FROM NIGERIA, SOUTH AFRICA , SOUTH WEST AFRICA, BECHUANALAND, BASUTOLAND, SWAZILAND, SPANISH GUINEA, FERNANDO POO, THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, KENYA, THE RHODESIAS AND ZANZIBAR.

MOST OF THE DELEGATES HAVE BEEN IN CLOSED MEETING FOR FOUR DAYS AND PRESIDENT NKRUMAH HAS ALREADY ADDRESSED THEM TWICE. AFTER THE JUNE 4TH FORMAL MEETING, THE CONFERENCE WAS EXPECTED TO GO AGAIN INTO PRIVATE SESSION.
