Background: East and West German Government officials on Friday (15 January) held political talks in the West German capital Bonn for the first time. They agreed to continue their dialogue on problems between the two states in East Berlin on January 26th.

The East German delegation was headed by Dr. Michael Kohl, State Secretary in East German Prime Minister Willi Stoph's office.

Leading the West Germans was Chancellery State Secretary Egon Bahr, one of Chancellor Willi Brandt's closest advisers.

The official statement issued by the West German Government Press Office made no mention of what topics were discussed or whether any progress was made at the meeting, the third in the current series agreed between the two Governments last October.

The first two meeting between Herr Bahr and Dr. Kohl were held in East Berlin; no visible progress was made.
