Background: Recent torrential rains in the province of Beni, north-eastern Bolivia, have resulted in disastrous flooding throughout the region. It has been estimated that one-and-a-half million people have been affected by the floods and the Bolivian Farmers' Association has said that 500,000 head badly hit and the nearby town of Santa Ana is almost totally isolated. Rivers have burst their banks to turn roads and residential streets into waterways. People have been using canoes made of hollowed-out tree trunks for transport. In some places, the level of the water has reached the tops of tree and electricity lines. In Santa Ana, people made homeless by the floods have been taking refuge in the local school and town hall, where conditions are very cramped. Much of the region has been declared a disaster area and some emergency relief supplies have arrived. However, the government has been criticised for not providing enough aid and local people held a 76-hour long strike recently in protest.
