Background: VISNEWS June 11 filmed the third part of the Bonn debate in the Bundestag when Herr Ollenhauer, West German Socialist leader, attacked Dr. Adenauer's decision to remain Chancellor. He claimed the German people did not want a one-man system of Government.
When the debate opened, the large square Chamber, with its horseshoe rows of desks for the deputies, was crowded. Television and film cameras lined the balconies. For much of the time, Dr. Adenauer and Dr. Erhard, Vice-Chancellor and Economics Minister, with whom a public reconciliation was effected June 10, sat side by side.
Herr Ollenhauer was mainly concerned in showing how the twilight of the German democracy was threatening to spread from the Christian Democratic ranks to the foundations of public life because of Dr. Adenauer's "autocratic and irresponsible actions". In reply, Dr. Adenauer said it was the highest principle of the democracy to respect the individual conscience. He did not want to see a recurrence in Germany of what happened in Britain in 1945 when Sir Winston (then Mr.) Churchill was defeated and Earl (then Mr.) Atlee had to take over the Potsdam negotiations.
Once the Chancellor had finished, the tension went out of the debate. Previously the Opposition had decided not to move a vote of censure on Dr. Adenauer.
