SYNOPSIS: The university's fulfilled one of the major aims of a building programme to improve education facilities in the country. in recent years a technical institute and a school of rural development were completed at Thies. Education officials hope that by the year 2000, everyone in Senegal will be better educated. This year the university has accepted 480 students, though, in future, it's capable of housing 650.
President Senghor headed the list of officials present. It also included numerous other government members, several diplomats and university professors. The guests were given an extensive tour of university facilities after the official opening.
There are three blocks of 136 classrooms. These include three large laboratories and a lecture theatre which seats 250. That's where the inauguration ceremony took place. Delegates heard the director of the University, M. Andre Kergreis, say liberal and scientific arts are the major aims of the university and these play a major part in the long term development of the nation.
President Senghor said education and technology play the vital role in Senegal's industrialisation. he said it's essential that there's extremely close liaison between the university and the industrial world. The President's confident the university will produce professors and engineers which will enable the country to become a leader in the developing world and an example for others to follow.
