Background: In El Salvador -- guerrillas control large areas of the country, such as the central district of San Vicente. Patrols criss-cross the terrain looking for army units, while keeping out of sight of military aircraft. Most guerrilla headquarters are hidden well inside the mountains, and recently a United States television crew (NBC) was taken to one of the bases and allowed to film the enclave. There they saw several hundred of the anti-government rebels, including boys and girls in their early teens. Some are as young as 12. The Salvadorian guerrillas use Japanese-made binoculars and two-way radios. Their weapons are of Western European, Israeli and U.S. manufacture. Group Commander Ante Goyo, a false name, denies Cuba supplies the arms. He says they are captured from the army or bought on the black market. The guerrilla base is also home for a sizeable refugee community and doctors who care for the wounded guerrillas also care for the refugees.
