Background: Richard (Dick Tiger) Ihetu weighed in "on the nose" at 106 pounds -- the limit -- Monday (25 April) for the night's defense of his middleweight boxing crown at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Challenger Emile Griffith -- cat-like welterweight champ -- weighed in at 150 1/2 pounds.
An estimated 15,000 boxing fans will pay about $150,000 for on-the-spot privileges to watch Griffith try to wrest the middleweight crown from Dick Tiger of Nigeria in a 15-round bout.
If Griffith succeeds, he will become the third 147-pound class champ to dethrone the 160-pound division titleholder. Only Ray Robinson, against Jake LaMotta, and Carmen Basilio against Robinson, have prevailed over a middleweight champion while they led the welterweight division.
Griffith is 27 years old, Tiger nearly 37.
