Background: On his arrival at Cairo airport during his latest visit to the Middle East, the Untied Nations Secretary General Dr. Kurt Waldheim, said that he had found a more relaxed atmosphere in the four countries he had visited so far. Dr. Waldheim arrived in Egypt from Amman on Thursday (6 June) having already visited Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Israel.

He told the newsmen waiting for him at the airport that the political climate in the area was very different from when he he had made a tour of the Middle East six months previously. He said that the disengagement agreement between Syria and Israel foreshadowed an important role for the Untied Nations. He has discussed this role with President Hafez Al-Assad of Syria, and he expected the subject would be covered in his talks with Egyptian leaders he would be meeting.

Dr. Waldheim said that he had the impression that it would take some time for the Geneva Peace Conference to reconvene, but there were two schools of though about when that should be. Some believed that it should begin its work again quickly so as not to lose the momentum of recent Middle East peace efforts, while others favoured waiting until what had already been achieved was absorbed.

Asked whether he would see the Palestine Commando Chief, Mr. Yasser Arafat, Dr. Waldheim said that he had not yet seen his programme. Mr. Arafat wa sin Cairo for the meeting of the Palestine National Council, a kind of parliament in exile.

The Secretary General had been met at the airport by the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ismail Fahmi, and that night they met to review the situation in the Middle East. It is believed that their talks included the arrangements for separating Syrian and Israeli forces on the Golan Heights, and the next stage of the Geneva peace conference. Dr. Waldheim was expected to meet with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat on Saturday.
