Background: Nice, in the south of France, turned itself over to the colour, noise and extravagance of the 91st annual pre-Lenten Carnival on Sunday (2 February).
Thousands of people gathered to celebrate this year's theme: "Carnival, King of the Gourmets".
Glutton-sized samples of cuisine from throughout the south of France were on display, drawn on the parade of twenty floats -- some as big as houses -- and carried by groups dressed as giants.
Entertainment was also provided by mobile bands, grotesque and bawdy carnival figures -- and a strong prevailing wind which played havoc with some of the fancy dress.
