    KAUNDA: "Political freedom is our right as peoples and as human beings. Therefore, the struggles to obtain these rights becomes both sacred and uncompromising. The existence of apartheid system in our sub-region is evil. This summit marks the beginning of establishing a new economic order within this sub-region, based on our collective desire, collective desire, to control our own political and economic destinies."

    SYNOPSIS: The countries' territorial strife, poverty and economic uncertainty is the main reason for the PTA agreement.President Kaunda of Zambia welcomed the delegates and addressed the meeting.

    Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi who is President of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), said that Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland have a customs union with South African and they would probably sign the document in the future.Countries who did not sign at this meeting are being given founder-member status if they sign within three months.
