Background: President Nasser arrived in Moscow just after 11.30 today, April 29th, for an 18-day visit. He promised "closer ties" between Egypt and Syria and Russia.
Egyptian students at the airport chanted: " Hail, leader of the Arab world,"Russian Pioneers, members of the junior Communist movement, rushed up to Nasser and his party and thrust posies of fresh flowers into their hands.
A Moscow Guards regiment played the Egyptian national anthem as President Nasser left the plane to be greeted by Mr Kruschev and President Voroshilov.
The British and French Ambassadors, whose countries have no direct diplomatic relations with Egypt, were not present at the airport. Neither was the Israeli Ambassador.
President Nasser's first official act was to lay a wreath on the Lenin-Stalin mausoleum in Red Square. Later he dismissed his Car and walked through the Spassky Gate of the Kremlin to pay an official call on President Voroshilov.
