Background: The Congo situation; .... a change of scene to Brazzaville, where November 28 President Kasavubu and other Congo leaders watched a big parade to celebrate the second anniversary of the Republic of the Congo - formerly the French Congo. Their host was President Fulbert Youlou of the neighbouring Republic.
President Kasavubu - fresh from his triumphant return from the United Nations - was accompanied by Mr. Tshombe, President of the break-away Katanga Province. And Colonel Mobutu, Congo's military leader, was also among the spectators on the official dais. During the parade of airborne troops, armoured cars, jeeps and tanks, news came that Mr. Lumumba had escaped from his home in Leopoldville, where he has been kept under arrest for some weeks by Colonel Mobutu's troops.
Colonel Mobutu left Brazzaville to begin a search for Mr. Lumumba, while President Kasavubu stayed for further anniversary ceremonies, and it was thought possible he might have talks with President Tshombe.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lumumba's whereabouts are still unknown, although he left a note to say he would shortly return to Leopoldville.
