Background: In the Republic of Korea there has been an intense struggle between the Government and the Opposition over the Government's Bill to revise the national security law. The Government maintained that the purpose of the Bill was to enable it to deal more effectively with espionage and other Communist activities directed from over the frontier in North Korea. The Opposition has opposed the measure because it believes that the Government's real purpose is to restrict freedom of speech and the Press.
The struggle came to a head on Wednesday, 24th December.
On that day, several hundred police entered the Assembly building in Seoul and forcibly expelled Democratic Party Opposition members who had been holding a sit-down strike against the Bill since 19th December.
When the Opposition members attempted to resist the police, and armed themselves with chairs, the police overpowered them, knocked down some of them and dragged them all out of the building.
Then, with all opposition removed, the Government (consisting of members of Dr. Rhee's Liberal Party) passed the security law revision Bill by 128 votes to none.
Later in the day, Opposition members tried to demonstrate outside the Assembly building but were soon stopped by the police.
