Background: World Boxing Association Flyweight champion Masao Ohba of Japan scored a unanimous points win over challenger Fernando Cabanela of the Philippines in Tokyo on Saturday (23 October).

Twenty two year old Ohba, punching and moving much faster than his twenty five year old challenger, built up a solid lead in the early rounds. Scoring heavily with quick left jabs and solid right crosses, he was never in danger form the tough but unimpressive Cabanela throughout the fifteen round contest.

Cabanela was warned twice for low blows, and had one point deducted in the ninth round for the offence.

Ohba's victory was the most impressive performance from the Japanese boxer since he won the title from Thailand's Berkrerk Chartvanchai a year ago.

SYNOPSIS: Tokyo, and World Boxing Association Flyweight Champion Masao Ohba of Japan enters the ring to meet his Filipino challenger Fernando Cabanela. At twenty two, Ohba was three years younger than his challenger.

From the early rounds, Ohba built up a solid lead. Cabanela, wearing striped trunks, was much the slower boxer. His concentration on body attacks led him to be warned twice for low blows, and he was subsequently penalised one point for the offence.

Ohba went to work with fast left and right hands to Cabanela's head, and dominated the fifteen round contest with his superior speed. His constant attacks to the tough Filipino's face left his opponent with heavy bruises and swellings. Cabanela was never able to master the younger man, and later admitted he had been well beaten. This was Ohba's thirty first victory.
