Background: Alarm on the French Riviera among tourist officials, hoteliers and holidaymakers over the French Government's plan to dispose of atomic waste into the Mediterranean. Despite the Government and French Atomic Energy Commission's assurance that there is no danger, residents and tourists Oct 12 continued to show anxiety as security measures and equipment descended on the fishing port.

Nine strange barrels in which the atomic waste - from France's number one reactor plant at Marcoule - was held were stowed in a disused naval shed and were later loaded by crane onto a lorry and taken for temporary storage to Antibes' historic Vauban fortress, 500 metres from the port. Nearby a sign: 'Deposit no rubbish.' And also a local school.
