Background: UNITED STATES TROOPS TOMORROW (SATURDAY) ENTER THE FOURTH DAY OF MASSIVE FIELD-TRAINING EXERCISES IN WEST GERMANY. THE OPERATION IS THE SECOND STAGE OF LAST WEEK'S OCEAN-SPANNING OPERATION "BIG LIFT", IN WHICH 15,000 TROOPS WERE FLOWN FROM TEXAS IN THE WORLD'S BIGGEST AIRLIFT.

THESE MEN OF THE 2ND U.S. ARMOURED DIVISION ARE STAGING A MOCK BATTLE AGAINST THE RHINE-BASED 3RD U.S. ARMOURED DIVISION. THE WEEK-LONG EXERCISES ARE TAKING PLACE IN THE FRANKFURT-KASSEL AREA, AND TODAY THE 2ND ARMOURED BEGAN AN OFFENSIVE AGAINST THE "ENEMY".

THERE WAS JUST ONE SMALL SNAG, HOWEVER: HOW TO GET THEIR EQUIPMENT ACROSS THE RIVER MAIN, NEAR HANAU. THE PROBLEM OF TASKS WAS EASILY SOLVED- THEY WERE AMPHIBIOUS. THEY CRUISED ACROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE WITH THE EASE OF A PADDLE-STEAMER.

BUT GETTING TRUCKS ACROSS WAS ANOTHER MATTER. TROOPS HASTILY RIGGED UP A FLOATING BRIDGE AND SHIPPED THEM - AND THEMSELVES - OVER THAT WAY. HIGH AD DRY, THE PROGRESS CONTINUED.
