Background: A seven year old female giant panda, Huan Huan, has arrived in Japan. She is a gift from China, and replaces Lan Lan, another female who died last September (1979). China's gifts of giant pandas to Japan began in 1972 to mark the return to normal of relations between the two countries.

SYNOPSIS: The latest gift has again prompted panda fever. Manufacturers and retailers responded by producing a wide range of souvenirs, and panda-suited promoters summoned customers.

The profitable business of giving pleasure produced a variety of gifts to stock the shelves of shops around Tokyo's Ueno Zoo, the new home for the giant panda. China's Peking Zoo has become a world leading breeding establishment for giant pandas. In 1978 the zoo arranged the first birth of giant panda twins from an artificially inseminated mother. But no such scientific mother. But no such scientific techniques are planned for Huan Huan.

Huan Huan is intended as the bride of Ueno Zoo's other giant panda, Kang Kang, a male given in 1972.

His mate arrived from China on a special cargo flight, and will live in an air conditioned enclosure. Peking Zoo officials describe her as being exceptionally strong and healthy, but before being introduced to Kang Kang she must spend time in quarantine. The rare species is found only in China, and twelve have been given away as tokens of China's improved relations with other countries.

Three officials from Peking Zoo accompanied Huan Huan, and they officially handed the gift to Ueno Zoo. Now, the waiting begins, to see whether the alliance between Huan Huan and Kang Kang will produce Japan's first baby giant panda.
