Background: WITH INTEREST IN FALL-OUT SHELTERS IN THE UNITED STATES INCREASING, A LONG ISLAND FAMILY OF FOUR VOLUNTEERED TO SPEND A WEEK IN SUCH A SHELTER TO TEST THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS ARISING OUT OF LIVING IN IT.

MR. AND MRS. KREESE, WITH THEIR FIVE AND THREE YEAR OLD SONS, ENTERED THE SHELTER ON MONDAY, 2ND OCTOBER. ONCE A DAY, DURING THE SEVEN DAYS OF THEIR CONFINEMENT, THEY WILL BE INTERVIEWED BY PSYCHOLOGISTS OVER A COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM.

THE SHELTER IS PROVIDED BY THE HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND CIVIL DEFENSE AUTHORITIES AND IS FULLY EQUIPPED WITH FOOD AND WATER FOR A WEEK'S STAY. IT IS ONE OF A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS ON FALL-OUT SHELTERS BEING CARRIED OUT THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES, BUT TO THE KREESE CHILDREN IT WAS JUST A BIG ADVENTURE.
