Background: INTRODUCTION: All 110 passengers and crew aboard a Taiwanese Boeing 737 were killed when the plane exploded and crashed about half hour after taking off on Saturday (22 August).

SYNOPSIS: The plane was on a domestic flight from the capital Taipei to the Pescadore Islands, off the west coast of Taiwan.

But half an hour after taking off the plane exploded in mid-air and crashed in the mountainous region near Miaolai, about 130 kilometres (80 miles) southwest of Taipei. There were six aircrew aboard and 104 passengers, including 16 Japanese and two Americans. At first the airport officials said that they suspected sabotage. But later they said that the plane had taken off once then returned to Taipei airport for emergency repairs after the air pressure dropped inside the cabins.

The aircraft set off again and then crashed. The debris was scattered over a wide area. As soon as the crash was reported rescue teams set off to search the paddy fields and the mountain area for survivors. But after 33 bodies were discovered hope was given up. The government has announced that a full-scale inquiry is to be set up into the cause of the disaster.
