TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: HEATH: Over the centuries France has produced many great men and history will count Charles De Gaulle among the greatest of them. Many here in Britain will think of him first in 19 hundred and 40, with the Free French, fighting alongside us. A rather lonely figure and seeming then really to be the personifications of France and determined to restore her to her rightful place amongst the nations. Others more recently will think of him as President of the fifth Republic. And we can acknowledge the magnitude of his achievement, even if at times his policies differed from those which Her Majesty's government followed here in Britain. He was a man with an austere faith, sustained by it, inspired by unswerving patriotism used in the service of his own country. Those of us who sometimes met him and talked to him remember perhaps above everything his extra-ordinary courtesy to us and his immense charm which affected one as soon as one met him. But today we pay tribute to a very great man, a great Frenchman and a Statesman of world renown."
