Background: The new polar bear cub at London Zoo chose an icy winter's day to take his first steps out-of-doors.
The baby bear, watched closely by Sally his mother, eventually decided to parade for the cameramen on Wednesday (February 14).
Paddiwack weighed only one pound (0.45 kilos) at birth but already scales 20 lbs (9.7 kilos). When fully grown he should weigh 280 lbs (127 kilos).
Paddiwack is expected to be the main attraction at London Zoo this year.
The little bear's parents "Sally and Sam" came to the Zoo from Moscow in June 1960.
SYNOPSIS: Britain shivers in the grip of snow and ice but at London Zoo a little bear didn't mind at all. Paddiwack the baby polar bear chose just such a day to come out into the world for the first time.
The Zoo was deserted on Wednesday except for cameramen when Paddiwack took his first walk under the watchful eye of Sally, his mother. The little bear is expected to be the main attraction at London Zoo.
Paddiwack weighed only one pound at birth but is already twenty pounds. When fully grown, he will be two hundred and eighty pounds.
And after such a long walk and all those cameramen, a bear -- even a baby one -- works up a big appetite.
